0. Beginning of the Journey: Seeing Reactions Through Voltage

Cyclic Voltammetry

You often see a plot of Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). CV is probing how the system responds as you push it out of equilibrium by apply a driving force – voltage.

Electrochemistry is about what happens when you control electrons directly in different environments.

Instead of mixing reagents and waiting, electrochemistry lets you dial a voltage and watch how a system responds. That single knob—potential—gives access to:

when a reaction wants to happen (thermodynamics) how fast it happens (kinetics) whether it is limited by supply (transport)

Peaks → reactions occurring Peak position → thermodynamic driving force Peak height → kinetics + transport Shape → reversibility and mechanism

1. Everything Happens at Surfaces

All electrochemical reactions happen at interfaces—specifically, at electrode surfaces.

Electrons live in the electrode. Molecules live in the solution.

For a reaction to occur, they must meet at the interface

(Cyclic Voltammetry, CV)
